"Strange
things I have in head, that will to hand,
Which
must be acted, ere they may be scanned."
No,
this is not Byron speaking (nor it's Marcus). This is Shakespeare, from
his play "Macbeth", act three, scene IV. I found this quotation while I
was reading it for school. Looks like Shakespeare's really up-to-date:
Macbeth seems to be pretty worried about some Psi Cops scanning him and
learning about his deeds ...
Mindwar
-
Sinclair
to Bester: "Get out of my head! You wanna talk to me, TALK to me!"
-
Kelsey
to Sinclair: "There are rules and there are RULES, Commander."
-
Bester
to Sinclair: "Since we bear a greater responsibility, we are afforded greater
latitude, in the interest of efficiency."
-
Ivanova
and Kelsey: "And Psi Cops? What are you rated?" "P12. Someone has to keep
an eye on the rest." "Yes, but who watches the watchmen?"
-
Sinclair
and Bester: "What kind of covert operation?" "That information is on a
need to know basis, Commander. And you don't need to know."
-
Ironheart
to Talia: "Because in this business, whoever has the strongest telepath,
wins. The military wants to scan the enemy. The enemy wants a telepath
strong enough to block the scan and we want someone who can cut through
the block."
-
Ironheart:
"Think about it. You want to assassinate someone, so you bring in a telekinetic.
He reaches into the person's throat and then gently, quietly with a thought,
he pinches the carotid artery shut. The blood stops, the brain starves,
the target dies. And then you just let go. Murder without a trace. No fingerprints,
no poisons."
-
Ironheart:
"We all thought Psi Corps was controlled by the government, but that's
changing. The Corps is starting to pull the strings behind the scenes.
They're more powerful than you can begin to imagine. Telepaths make the
ultimate blackmailers."
-
Ironheart
to Talia: "Only one in every thousand humans has telepathic abilities.
Only one in every thousand telepaths has telekinetic abilities. And half
of them are clinically insane."
-
Talia:
"Do you know what it's like when telepaths make love, Commander? You drop
every defense and it's all mirrors reflecting each other's feelings. Deeper
and deeper until somewhere along the line, your souls mix and it's a feeling
so profound, it makes you hurt. It's the only moment in a telepaths life
you no longer hear the voices."
-
Bester
to Garibaldi: "Anatomically impossible, Mr. Garibaldi, but you're welcome
to try...anytime...anywhere."
-
Sinclair
and Kelsey: "What the hell?" "Mindquake."
-
Bester
and Sinclair: "We had our orders." "Mister, I don't care if you had a personal
message from god, complete with stone tablets. You lied to me. You held
information and put the station at risk."
-
Bester
and Sinclair: "Mr. Ironheart is no longer what you or I would consider
entirely human." "Then what is he?" "We don't know."
-
Ivanova
and Kelsey: "Good ol' Psi Corps. You guys never cease to amaze me! All
the moral of Jack the Ripper. What do you do in your spare time? Juggle
babies over a fire pot? Oops, there goes another calculated risk!" "You're
not helping the situation." "Lady, YOU are the situation."
-
Ironheart
and Sinclair: "The Psi Corps is dedicated to one thing, Commander: Control.
Control over telepaths, the economy, the courts, over matter, over thought
itself."
-
Bester
and Sinclair: "You realize of course my superiors will believe in none
of this." "Yes, especially since in about an hour, we'll have a small accident
in data storage that will erase the file you just saw."
-
Bester
and Sinclair: "That is a lie." "Yes, it is. What is your point?"
-
Bester
and Sinclair: "Be seeing you, Commander."
Eyes
-
Gray and
Ivanova: "Lieutenant Commander, I'm aware of your hostility towards Psi
Corps and the reason for it...and I sympathize." "You do? How nice! I shall
send you a card on your birthday."
-
Gray:
"It's not easy to have your dreams snatched away, just because you're different."
-
Gray:
"Part of a dream is better than none."
-
Ivanova:
"Mr. Gray, I'm grateful the Psi Corps's given you a purpose in life, but
when that purpose includes scanning MY mind to prove MY loyalty, it's not
only an invasion of my privacy, but my HONOR. As for fear, if you enter
my mind for any reason, I will twist your head off and use it for a chamberpot!
If you'll excuse me."
-
Sofie,
Comedy, Tragedy (Grins?): "Will it make the voices go away?" "No, but it
will make them sing like birds, Sofie." "A shame you refuse to cooperate."
A
Race Through Dark Places
-
Bester:
"It doesn't matter. I caught it, just before he died. Betrayed by his final
thoughts. Babylon 5."
-
Bester
and Ivanova: "For some time we've been aware of an underground railroad
smuggling unregistered telepaths away from Earth to the outher colonies
where the Corps can't reach them." "Well, so far I don't see a problem."
-
Garibaldi
and Sheridan: "It's damn ironic, isn't it? The Corps got started because
of our own fears. We took away every right they had and shoved them into
a big black box called Psi Corps. Now, look at them: Black uniforms, jack
boots, giving orders. Some days they scare the hell out of me." "Yeah,
if you ask me, we created our own monster. Maybe we deserve it."
-
Bester
to Garibaldi: "Would it interest you that I'm married, Mr. Garibaldi? That
I have a five-year-old daughter? That on Sundays when I'm back home we
pack a picnic lunch and go out under the dome on Syria Planum and watch
the stars come out? Hardly the description of a monster." "Smooth. You're
getting good at this. Keep working on it. Maybe one of these days I might
even be convinced that you're human after all."
-
Franklin:
"Back on Earth I heard things. The kind of things you're not supposed to
hear about. Genetic manipulation, breeding telepaths against their will,
so called relocation camps for rogue telepaths that aren't much better
than concentration camps."
-
Talia
to Bester: "You want to keep us frightened and isolated. Not just from
normals, but from each other. That's the real reason we wear gloves, isn't
it? To keep us apart. But what happens when the gloves come off?"
-
Bester:
"You were raised by the Corps, clothed by the Corps. We are your father
and your mother."
-
Rogue
teeps: "Mary had a little lamb/ her fleece was white as snow/ And everywhere
that Mary went/ the lamb was sure to go./
Divided
Loyalties
-
Talia
to Ivanova: "Oh, 'teep': It's sort of an in-joke around the Corps. Teeps
for telepaths, teeks for telekinetics."
-
Lyta:
"Our agent found out about a secret Psi Corps program. They bring someone
in and work them over with drugs and deep scan to create a new personality.
But it's always there...watching, listening, spying. Until the day the
password it sent telepathically. It can't be spoken, it has to be sent
directly into the brain. At that moment the real personality is destroyed
and the implanted one takes control...permanently."
-
Lyta:
"They've apparently been using this technique to plant moles in several
government agencies, including Babylon 5. We don't know who's been infected,
but someone here is not what he or she appears. Our guess is that it's
someone on the command staff or close to it since the mole would be looking
for vital information. All we have is a codename: Control."
Dust
To Dust
-
Franklin
and Ivanova: "I will not support murder. We cannot kill him." "Can we wound
him? Just a little?"
-
Bester
and Sheridan: "Far it be from me to try and talk you out of your paranoia,
Captain. You chose not to trust me. Well, that's sad, and unfortunate.
But unlike the rest of you, I have no intention of letting it get into
the way of my work. Doctor. Trust, Captain. You should try it some time."
-
Bester:
"I'm here to save your butts. Next time show a little gratitude."
-
Bester
to Garibaldi: "My blood is the same color as yours. And what I do, I do
to protect Earth, same as you. You don't like how I do it, that's your
prerogative. But there are things going on out there that you know
nothing about, because we stopped them. There are dangers all around us.
And wether you like it or not, we may be all that is between you and the
abyss."
-
Garibaldi
and Bester: "I thought the sleepers keep you from scanning anyone." "That's
right." "So, how did you know he was lying?" "Well, the odds were good
that he was lying about SOMETHING. Liars are always afraid that someone
is going to see through them. So, I just provided him with a vehicle for
his paranoia. You captain's options notwithstanding, the badge and the
uniform do have certain...advantages." "Like an intimidation?" "Absolutely.
Just like YOUR badge...and YOUR uniform."
-
Bester
and Garibaldi: "If I had my talent working, I could've warned you when
he was coming." "And if I had a baseball bat, we could hang you from the
ceiling and play pinata. I think I should've gone straight to G'Kar." "We
have no evidenve that he made the sale yet. Why annoy the Narn without
course if we are wrong. Shut off the problem at the source and the rest
attends to itself. A pinata, huh? So you think of me as something bright
and cheerful full of toys and candy for young children. Thank you! That
makes me feel...much better about our relationship."
-
Bester
and Psi Cop: "You couldn't have gotten here two minutes earlier." "I tried
to send to you, but I couldn't get through." "Doesn't matter. We'll finish
our business here later. You know, I said all along this whole dust idea
wasn't going to work. We spent five years developing the stuff, tying it
into latent genes, and it hasn't produced one telepath of acceptable strength
among the normal population. Oh, well. At least we got it out of the hands
of aliens and back among the humans where it belongs."
Ship
Of Tears
-
Bester:
"You know, if this keeps up, I'm gonna start thinking that people around
here...just don't like me."
-
Bester
and Ivanova: "I was expecting the Captain." "He sent me." "Did he? He has
a better sense of humor than I thought."
-
Bester:
"The enemy of my enemy is my friend."
-
Bester
to Ivanova: "You know the real reason you don't like me, Commander? It's
the jealousy of evolution. Normals like you are obsolete. The future belongs
to telepaths...and I intend to make sure that future happens. One way or
another."
-
Bester
to Ivanova: "But we can't be on top if the aliens get there first and some
of them have. Through Clark they infiltrated the Psi Corps. And apparently
they have their own plans for my telepaths. Whoever these aliens are, they
are interfering with MY plans for the future. I won't have it! And so,
I need someone who feels the same way I do...which brings me to you. You'd
like to hurt them, Commander? Because I think I know how. If you are up
for it."
-
Sheridan
and Bester: "So how did you find about all this?" "I'm a...telepath. Work
it out."
-
Bester
to Sheridan: "You war...is now my war."
-
Ivanova
and Sheridan: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." "You sound dubious."
"He's still a Psi Cop. I don't trust him, never will. He has interest in
helping us now, but once this is over, he'll turn on us. You do know that?"
Epiphanies
-
Bester
and Zack: "Just a guess, Mr. Allan, but I suggest the word you are looking
for is 'door'. Now, please notify the captain that I'm here, I need to
meet with him and the rest of the command staff ASAP. I assume my usual
quarters in the brig are available. I have grown so attached to the place."
"For you, Mr. Bester, always."
-
Lyta and
Zack: "Psi Cops are trained to make everyone nervous, but Mr. Bester can
even make other Psi Cops nervous." "Hell, the man can make Poison Ivy nervous."
-
Bester
and Sheridan: "I want you to know that I object to this, Captain. Ms. Alexander
has no business being here. She's a blip. By all rights, I should arrest
her and take her back with me." "You could do that. And I could nail your
head to the table, set fire to it, and feed your charred remains
to the Pak'Ma'Ra. But it's an imperfect world and we never get exactly
what we want. So get used to it." "Captain, this is pointless. She is a
P5. If I were really going to try something, she's not powerful enough
to block me anyway. You're just embarrassing yourself, and her. Haven't
we learned by now to trust each other?" "No. Now sit."
Moments
Of Transition
-
Bester
and Lyta: "And...well, there's just no delicate way to say this. I want
you body." "WHAT?! Are you out of your mind?" "Hey, that's a funny question
to ask a telepath...since we spend so much of our time in other people's
minds. I don't want it now, Lyta, just when you are not...using it anymore.
After...your passing."
The
Face Of The Enemy
-
Lyta to
Franklin: "Somewhere on Beta Colony, there is...an institution. And one
room in that institution...there is a man, who spends his days and nights
screaming at...things only he can see. Things we planted in his mind."
-
Lyta and
Franklin: "They taught me what a telepath was and what we can do. And all
time I had never been afraid of who we were...until that day...when we
did what we had to do because no one else would fight."
-
Edgars:
"President Clark isn't the real problem, he's trivial. One way or another
he'll be gone in a few years, but the telepaths he put in power, the Psi
Corps, those will be with us forever. That's the real danger."
-
Bester:
"I knew there were forces out there with plans for my telepaths, but this...I
had no idea. The sheer scope of it. Well, we'll stop it now, of course,
in our own way."
Rising
Star
-
Sheridan
to Bester: "I find it amazing that you think that threats still mean anything
to me. 'Do this or you're a dead man.' Death: been there, done that."
